I am humbled and honored to serve as the Majority Floor Leader in the New Mexico House of Representatives and, since being elected in 2010, I have worked to creating high-wage jobs, keep our communities safe and improve our education system so that every New Mexico child has access to a world-class education. As a graduate of Albuquerque Public Schools, I look back fondly on those teachers who were such a positive influence in my life and I believe that our most important job as a state is to ensure that every student has access to a quality education. I will continue to advocate for bold reforms that give students and the teachers the tools that provide them with the greatest opportunity for success.
New Mexico is a beautiful state with incredible scenery, vast resources, and a diverse workforce that includes some of the greatest minds in the country. In the last four years, we have made significant economic advances: we reduced taxes to be competitive with neighboring states, we eliminated the double taxation of goods that was hurting small businesses and we closed loopholes so that out of state corporations must now pay their fair share.
Protecting the people of New Mexico and providing a safe environment for us to raise our families is a top priority. New Mexico is ranked 3rd in the country in violent crimes; a statistic that is unacceptable. I have sponsored and supported numerous pieces of legislation aimed at strengthening our state police force, increasing criminal penalties for crimes against children, and keeping violent criminals in jail and off our streets.
