I believe that the best way to increase revenue for the state is by promoting economic development. We must be good stewards of every dollar of public money. Along those lines, every state agency’s performance should be carefully monitored to determine if their programs are performing as they should. We should cut funding to those programs that are not working and spend more money on those that are.
New Mexico’s tax burden is lower than the national average and ranks 14th lowest in the country. We are lucky in New Mexico to have an abundance of natural resources that helps provide a steady source of revenues to our general fund; nearly a quarter of all revenues come from mineral leasing. It is that steady source or revenue that lowers the burden on the taxpayer. While protecting the environment, we should continue to encourage oil and gas production in New Mexico in order to keep taxes low.
